Grenada was discovered in 1498 by Christopher Columbus, who named it Conception Island. The island however was originally inhabited by Amerindians, such as the Arawaks and Caribs. Many of their artifacts can still be found through-out the island and carvings can easily be seen on large rocks in certain locations. After the island was colonized, it constantly changed colonial power for years, between the British and French. Eventually the position was stabilized by the British and Grenada received full Independence in 1974 under the dictatorship of Eric Gairy. The island was the home of slavery on sugar estates and plantations that were established in the 19th century through-out the island. Sugar was the main export and gradually Cocoa took over. However, the main export currently is Nutmeg, as Grenada is the world’s second largest nutmeg producer. In 1954, Grenada was hit by its first Category 5 Hurricane, Hurricane Janet. Some buildings are still standing today from before this hurricane. Fifty years later, Grenada was hit by its second category 5 hurricane, Hurricane Ivan,in 2004. The damage was catastrophic but the island has been able to revive itself, with the addition of its new Cricket stadium.
